What are the check in and check out times?

Check in is any time after 15:00 – however, if you arrive earlier you can drop your bags in our secure luggage room and enjoy our facilities until then.

Check out is no later than 10:30 – for those wanting to stay longer, you can store your bags and enjoy the hostel all day if you wish.

Some form of ID is required for all guests arriving at the hostel.

Please contact the hostel if you will be arriving late at night.

 

What is the latest I can check in?
We have 24 hour reception, so there is no latest check in time.

 

 

Can I leave my bags at the hostel?
Yes you can leave your bags free of charge before you check in and after you have checked out, up until 9pm. We also have long term storage available for a small £5 per night fee.

 

Is there bike storage available?
Yes, there is bike storage available, we do recommend you use a lock however.

 

What are the rooms like?
Double rooms have 1 double bed, triple rooms have 1 single bed and one bunk bed and quad rooms have 2 bunk beds. Dormitories will have between 6 and 16 beds and include personal lockers. We provide a key to the locker free of charge!

 

Do you have rooms for families with children?
No, all guests must be at least 18 years old when checking in.

 

Where is the hostel located?
Our award-winning hostel is located at 15 Johnston Terrace, right next to Edinburgh Castle.

 

What is there to do in Edinburgh?
There is plenty to do both in the city centre and out of town. The medieval Old Town and the Georgian New Town give Edinburgh it’s title as a UNESCO World Heritage Site so there’s plenty to explore as well as a range of other fantastic attractions, great shopping and of course Edinburgh Castle!

Out of town there are options such as the 15th Century Rosslyn Chapel or why not take a MacBackpackers Tour and get into the Highlands of Scotland to visit the mysterious Nessie and explore the stunning Isle of Skye.

 

How do I get there from the airport / train station / bus station?
Castle Rock Hostel is within walking distance of Edinburgh’s St Andrews Square Bus Station and Edinburgh’s Waverley Train Station.

From the Edinburgh Airport take the blue airport bus no.100 (costs £4.50 one way and takes about 30 minutes) into the city centre and get off at South St David Street.

There is a bus every 10 minutes to and from the airport. From there walk towards the Old Town, along Princes Street and up Cockburn Street.

At the top of Cockburn Street turn right and walk all the way up the Royal Mile until you reach the roundabout at The Hub (at the foot of Castlehill). Johnston Terrace is the second exit, and our hostel is on the left at the end of the terrace.

 

Is linen included?
Yes, all bed linen is included.

 

Are there towels or hairdryers available?
Yes, towels can be hired for just £2 from reception. Hairdryers are free to hire.

 

Do you accept group bookings?
-Groups of 5 or more need to contact the hostel directly before making a reservation – This includes guests making separate / individual reservations up to and over 5 guests.

-We reserve the right to cancel any unauthorized group booking, including individual bookings made on the spot. You will be charged in full and not refunded.

 

What is your cancellation policy?
For bookings made via our website, cancellations up to 48 hours prior to the day of check-in – 90% refund (10% administration fee). After that you will be charged your first nights accommodation. No-shows may be charged the entire amount of their stay. For reservations made via alternate booking websites, please check their terms and conditions

 

AUGUST/NEW YEARS CANCELLATION POLICY

For bookings during August/Hogmanay (or part thereof) additional terms apply:

No changes or refunds to group bookings (5 guests or more) after June 30th or November 30th.

Any booking requesting a refund more than 7 days in advance will receive a 90% refund.

Cancellations less than 7 days in advance receive no refund.

Are there laundry facilities?
Yes, laundry costs £5 and can be organized through reception

 

Is there a kitchen?
Yes, guests are now permitted to once again use the kitchen!

 

Can we drink alcohol in the hostel?
Yes. We don’t sell alcohol in the hostel, but there are many shops nearby where you can buy beer, wine, and spirits. Please note that Scottish shops are only allowed to sell alcohol between 10am and 10pm.

 

Do you run events?
We are running some events again! Mondays is quiz night, Tuesday comedy and whisky tasting, Wednesday Ceilidh Dancing and Thursday Pub Crawl! Ask our friendly receptionists about each week’s events and how to join!
